The library to them is one of their happy recreational spots, a feeling that is shared by their parents, who also participate in the community pleasures offered in the park." In 1953, the park board and library system came to an agreement to renovate the first floor of the recreation building so the library could expand. Countryman noted that “when are tired of playing they come up and settle down happily with their books. During the early years of the first iteration of the library, Ms. The current pool went back to its roots and used natural filtration from the creek and pond, thus making it the nation’s first public natural swimming pool when it reopened in on July 24th, 2015.įrom 1910 to 1953, the library on the second floor of the recreation building was a huge hit for the children in the area. It wouldn’t be until 1979 when significant upgrades to the pool would be made again, with the most recent renovations coming in 2015. These upgrades saw its popularity rise, and in the 1930’s, as many as 1,400 children per day would use the pool during the Summer months. The pollution that ran through the creek eventually became too much of a hazard, and in 1927 a new pool was made that used city water and filtration and chlorination systems. The pool and pond quickly became a popular spot to cool off during the summer, and events such as log rolling contests and canoe races were a frequent sight at the park. It is because of the Webber’s contributions that Camden Park was renamed Webber Park in 1939. Charles Webber, who was the grandson of John Deere, owned and operated the Minneapolis branch of his grandfather’s company, which made it possible for his family to give back to the community by helping create one of the nicest parks in the city. The building had to be named after their 9-year-old son, John Deere Webber, who had recently passed away, a new dam had to be built along the creek, and an outdoor playground had to be installed for the children of the neighborhood to enjoy. This was made possible by Charles and Mary Webber, who donated the money for the construction with three conditions. The nucleus of the park would be a new recreation building next to the pond, featuring a library on the 2nd floor. In 1909 Camden Park officially opened, with one of its key features being a pond that the park board put there by damming Shingle Creek. While the neighbors and businesses in the area were split 50/50 on the idea of having to pay for the new park, the foundation was in place. As the need for a park in the area became more apparent, Superintendent Theodore Wirth and his colleagues gathered enough votes to establish a park along Shingle Creek. It has seen its ups and downs, but for over 100 years this park has been an important focal point in the Camden community.įor almost twenty years the Minneapolis Park Board planned on acquiring land near the Mississippi River in Camden for a new park. On the car ride over, before I met Amber and took my picture, I contemplated about which body part I should choose. I was so intrigued by this, I just had to meet Amber Krzys, creator and founder of bodyheart. The simple act of a heart painted on the skin also sparked moments of self reflection, compassion, honesty, and a touching revelation and reminder about self love. This very simple concept sparked an incredible and thought-provoking conversation between the two of us about women and their liberation from the social obligations of how society thinks we should look. As part of the project, Alexis was asked to draw a heart on her favorite part of her body, take a professional photo, and then explain why she loved it. Fighting Fire, TogetherĪt Coopers Fire, we’re always developing, testing and improving our products, to keep us at the cutting edge of fire protection for buildings.OutFit With Kit: Heart Your Body | Beautylish The concrete, brick and glass we use to make structures is inert and naturally fire-resistant: it’s usually the furniture and goods we put inside buildings that take to flame.īut to make everything out of aluminised fibreglass just wouldn’t be practical, comfortable or affordable – and it’s better to have good fire safety in place to prevent fire from happening in the first place. Zetex is now used in specialist fire curtains for theatres, replacing asbestos. Can’t We Make Buildings from These Materials?Īctually, we do – similar synthetic fibreglass materials used as insulation also serve to provide fire resistance – the insulation in your loft, as an example. An additional 10kg of weight can be expected to be added when donning an entry suit, even before breathing apparatus has been fitted.īecause of the toll they take on the wearer, and the inherent risks of being engulfed in flames, entry suits are reserved for the most extreme situations only. Extremely heavy insulation is used, too – which makes mobility and wearer stamina an issue. Zetex outperforms asbestos and almost all other synthetic fibreglass materials, and can be formed into a texturised fabric that can be applied to clothing. Instead, specialist fibreglass materials like Zetex are used, which exhibit many of the same properties as asbestos without the health risks. Entry suits usually aren’t aluminised reflecting radiation isn’t going to help when heat is being directly conducted through the material. It’s a highly specialised piece of protective equipment for firefighting, where the user is likely to become totally engulfed in flames. Entry SuitĬomplex rescue operations may require a firefighter to enter partially burning areas in order to clear a path out for trapped persons – and an entry suit is the most heavy-duty protection available for getting close to fire. For entry into flames, a more substantial suit is required. The user has about 30 seconds of complete engulfment before second-degree burns can occur. Generally, a proximity suit (and the person inside it) cannot survive long periods of direct contact with flames. It’s an extremely poor conductor of heat, making it an ideal insulator. Quilted Nomex® fabric (or a blend) is typically used as an insulation material: it’s tough, breathable, highly resistant to burning and doesn’t stretch, shrink, melt or drip. The more insulation, the better the resistance – but it can negatively impact mobility, which can be a crucial requirement. The aluminium can reflect up to 90% of the radiation from a fire, but it’s the interior insulation layers which prolong the duration that a person can be indirectly exposed to fire for. The suit works by reflecting high radiant loads with an aluminised outer layer, usually vacuum-deposited onto Kevlar or fibreglass. Fire proximity suits consist of several parts, which fully envelop the wearer and seal them from the environment: Modern proximity suits are still used by industrial workers, but they’re also used by volcanologists and for complex firefighting situations – like ARFF. Back then, the heat resistant material of choice was asbestos – now known to be fatally carcinogenic – but the principles of radiation, reflection and insulation are still the same today. Proximity suits date all the way back to the 1930s, when industrial workers in close quarters with furnaces needed protection from the incendiary temperatures. 1.5mm mesh, more breathable, for baby to breath freely. It’s a powerhouse climax moment in a song that’s just happy to run through the fields: too much bombast where it’s not necessarily needed. So when that big boisterous guest vocal comes in, it’s just too heavy-handed for the gentle joie de vivre of the song it’s in. This is despite being another piano-guided song and James’ guitar largely remains as a textural element in the background – but on the album that seems them generally embrace the ivory keys, it fits into the wider continuum and as the album has shifted towards its latter half, a breeze of joy and uninhibited melodic prettiness isn’t too far fetched anymore. The difference here (and I say this as one of the few defenders of “I Think I Found It”) is that the way this mood is conveyed here makes it a much more natural fit to the world of the Manics. But this has just as much common with actual Manics songs of the recent past which have tried run loose and with a full-hearted smile: think “I Think I Found It” or the most immediate moments of Resistance Is Futile. When Manics are on this kind of easygoing, jubilantly freespirited mode my first thought is always to refer back to The Great Western, James’ first solo album which has in deep secrecy become the foundation of so much of more contemporary Manics over a decade after Bradfield so sheepishly released it – the flourishes of melodies, the lightfooted spring in its step and even the layered vocals all feel like part of that same DNA. But that comparison only serves to highlight the dominance the vocals have on this song, and it honestly bites “Into the Waves of Love” a little.īecause “Into the Waves of Love” is a delicate song – I mean just look at that title, quite possibly the most blissfully twee thing Nicky Wire has ever written down (married to another lyric about his personal loss of direction, of course). Many have noted the similarities in the tone of the vocals with Pink Floyd‘s “The Great Gig in the Sky”, another song similarly fuelled by the powerhouse guest vocals – though in this case, we only spend around 30 seconds in a three minute song with them. It’s really hard not to mention “Into the Waves of Love” and then not instantly talk about the powerhouse vocal performance from Cat Southall that appears without warning or foreshadowing and then disappears just as abruptly, but which leaves a lasting impression. ‘The Ultra Vivid Lament’ is available on standard and deluxe CD, and vinyl. So, yeah, about that gospel vocal solo – and yes it’s very appropriate to call a vocal performance a solo in this situation. ‘The Ultra Vivid Lament’ is a brave move from the Welsh rockers and, while longtime fans might be thrown-off by their venture into pop territory, it’s a risk that pays off three decades into their career. The Secret He Had Missed – a duet with Sunflower Bean’s Julia Cumming – addresses personal regrets: ‘If only we could meet again / We could find a different end’. Single Orwellian, the most commercial track in the set, examines modern society through the lens of nostalgia, while Into The Waves of Love masks themes of angst and anxiety with radio-friendly, adult contemporary guitar and piano. Time is a central theme throughout ‘The Ultra Vivid Lament’, juxtaposing real life struggles with classic, melancholic pop music in the vein of ABBA and The Carpenters. It’s as much a reference to the group’s storied history as it is their recent experiences.Įerie opener Still Snowing In Sapporo looks to the group’s early-’90s tour of Japan and a time when it was ‘the four of us against the world’ – recalling guitarist Richey Edwards, who has been missing since 1995. ‘I had a very bad dream / The lead actor in it was me’ sings James Dean Bradfield on the aptly-titled Quest for Ancient Colour one of many tracks about overcoming adversity and longing for days gone by. In the time between 2018 LP ‘Resistance is Futile’ and the onset of Covid-19, songwriter Nicky Wire lost both his mother and father to cancer – the grief of which is felt throughout the collection. The group’s first album in three years marks a sonic shift, influenced not only by the current global climate, but also the personal experiences of the band. Manic Street Preachers look back to a world gone by with their latest offering ‘The Ultra Vivid Lament’. Charges are used to power up the chain weapon that Ghost Rider uses, and souls are used to beat level challenges. The game progression is fairly straightforward. This is tricky but you can do so by reaching the brutal attack mode. Some of the demons in the game use shields and therefore are invulnerable until you penetrate their shields. These levels are called ‘Damned’, ‘Condemned’ and ‘Brutal’, with the brutal attack being the highest level. When you combine block, jump and attack modes you can use different combination moves on your enemies which deliver various levels of damage. The circle button is used to grab dazed enemies. The ‘X’ button isused to jump and the right trigger button is used to both block and absorb souls more quickly. The square button controls the light attack and the triangle button controls the heavy attack. In Ghost Rider you get two attacks – a light and heavy attack. The combat in the game is very similar to that in God of War and I was almost taken aback by the similarities between the two games. The cut scenes are comic strips with narration that explains the story as you progress through the game. In the game, yourmain objective is to collect as many souls as you can by killing everything in sight, and to earn ‘skull points’ in the various skills and special abilities you get as Ghost Rider.Įach level has three set objectives to complete: ‘Soul Challenge’, which is to collect ‘x’ amount of souls (this changes every level) ‘Time Challenge’, which is to complete the level within a specific time frame and the ‘Wildcard Challenge’, which changes each level and can require anything from killing a beast with only 3 hits to shooting 10 demons with your shotgun. Johnny sells his soul for love and in return must walk the Earth as human by day and the demon ‘Ghost Rider’ by night, doing Mephisto’s bidding. For anyone unfamiliar with the background of the game, Johnny Blaze becomes the Ghost Rider after a deal gone wrong with the Demon Lord, Mephisto. Story mode begins with a level called ‘Ghost Rider in Hell’ and is set up with individual levels that remain locked until you complete the previous level. We decided to play at medium difficulty and figured story mode was as good a place as any to begin our descent into hell. In the PSP version there are three difficulty levels: forgiving, challenging and punishing, with three different game modes as well: story mode, challenge mode and multiplayer mode. We sat down with our favourite little handheld and had some interesting experiences with the PSP game version of the comic book anti-hero Johnny Blaze, otherwise known as ‘Ghost Rider’. With the recent Ghost Rider movie hype about to explode onto cinema screens in New Zealand very soon, the introduction of the Ghost Rider game franchise was almost an expected event. |
